Warning !!

How much warning do we need?

I have posted much about the end times recently and I have asked the Lord why and if this is to do with my calling is for this time and this day? After a lot of prayer, listening to the Lord, and study, I now personally believe I am called to be what I understand the Lord is calling “an end time watchman”. What is that? It is one who watches for and interprets signs of the end times. It is a prophetic calling. Is it so hard to believe that such as me could be used in this way? It is to me – but apparently not so to a few others.

So when CNN, the American main-stream reporting and news agency, via reporter Matthew Knight, put out an internet banner headline recently, “Floods, landslides, fire and drought: Extreme weather the norm in 2011” (http://edition.cnn.com/2011/12/07/world/europe/floods-fire-weather-2011/index.html)

I sat up and took notice. I found the report interesting in terms of how it ties up with so much of Biblical prophecy. So, I found a few scriptures to back up my thoughts too.

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;” ~ Luke 21:25

“And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath;” ~ Acts 2:19a

“Blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke:” ~ Joel 2:30b

“And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.” ~ Luke 21:11

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of Lord come.” ~ Joel 2:31

Now, today, we have news of possibly the worst storms that Scotland has seen in a few generations, maybe ever – winds of up to 165mph with snow blizzards. The world asks what is going on? Why is the weather doing this? Why are world events turning the way they are?

Let’s see now, could it just be some signs of the times? Could it possibly be that God is letting us know something here? Are these, even remotely, some possible harbingers of the end times spoken of so clearly in the Word of God?

It is not for me to tell you what to believe and what not to believe, and for that I thank God. It is simply my job to warn you and explain why I think some of these things. So it is with this blog post. All I can do is point these things out as a warning to you to prepare yourselves for the end times. You have the privilege of choice to believe me and accept the warning, or to discard what I say as rubbish – it is entirely up to you.

How much warning does the Church need? How much warning do YOU need? It’s all there for you to discern for yourselves. It’s just that sometimes, it takes someone like me to stick his neck out; to put his reputation on the line a little bit; and speak out these things so that you may, in your own time, decide for yourself and take any action you deem to be appropriate.

Gifts of the Spirit

The Prophetic

It’s been a while since I mentioned the prophetic but it has come once more into focus. Just in case you think I am about to launch into a great prophetic outburst – relax, it ain’t gonna happen today at least. There are so many prophetic voices out there at the moment that it is getting harder and harder to discern the good from the bad; the truth from the blether. Yet there is one word out there right now that has been repeated by so many prophets or prophetic voices, (there is a big difference), that surely we cannot ignore it.

The “word on the street” currently is about the imminent return of Jesus for His Bride – some call it the Rapture based upon Pauls words in 1 Corinthians 15:51-53 and upon Daniel 7. In fact, more than one Bible reading plan is right now pointing to all of this too. 1 Corinthians 15:51-53 says this “Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.” To me and many others, this passage speaks about Christ returning for His Bride.

It is a Biblical prophecy of the return itself and of what will happen at that time. We can trust this prophecy – assuming we all believe in the inerrancy of God’s Word. I am not concerned with Biblical prophecy today – it’s the prophecy of human origin that concern me. Everyone knows of the Harold Camping fiasco where a false prophecy was made very public only to fall flat on its face bringing all of Christianity into disrepute. I am sure there are a vast number of other, perhaps not so public, demonstrations of how not to prophesy.

The real problem is how to deal with prophecy and this is an area where the church has failed miserably to educate its people. Many churches don’t believe in prophecy at all so teach absolutely nothing on the subject. Others have very strictly controlled prophetic input to their congregations. Their main problem is that they use very un-prophetic people, usually ‘elders’, to ‘discern’ the validity of a prophecy. So if it sounds nice and cosy, or sort of ear-tickling, then give it, otherwise keep quiet and please sit down again. Real understanding of the prophetic in today’s church is so limited as to count as a resounding victory for the enemy. After all, Amos 3:7 says “Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” And if you silence the prophets, then nothing will get through to the church. Satan 1 Church 0.

I really do think it’s about time the church at large started to take a little more interest in the gifts of the Spirit, in particular the gift of prophecy. Amos 3:7 is written in the present tense – “Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” (emphasis mine) But how to start it off? That is the question. The Bible also says that ‘a prophet is without honour in his own town or land’. Most churches are quite resistant to change and prefer the status quo to remain constant. They don’t want anyone rocking their boat – “who wants prophecy anyway?”

In fact the majority of churches in the major denominations are against having anything like prophecy, or even healing in their midst lest it introduces unrest among the flock. As for deliverance ministry, well – just forget I ever spoke.

But it’s not a joke. How much is the church resisting God by resisting the prophetic. If it died out in the first century, then why are there so many prophets today? Why not take the Gamaliel position. If it is not of God then it won’t last and it won’t happen but if it is of God then at least give it the credit for being right and give it another hearing. Don’t judge the prophetic on just one prophecy either. Like anything else, it needs a fair trial period with plenty of input before you throw all of it away.

Otherwise, as they say here in England, you may well throw the baby out with the bath water.

Are these End Times ??

End Times

Most people say that the end times are all to do with Jesus returning. Well, yes, they are, and no, they’re not. Actually, there’s more to it than that. The end times, as a subject, has two main facets. One – what is happening in the world. Two – what is happening in the Church. I would like to very briefly outline these for you so that you may be aware of present day events and their possible significance for us as Christians. What is happening in the world should be showing us what should be happening in the Church – so that’s where I will start.

One – what is happening in the world.

Jesus said, in Matthew 16:1-3 (The Demand for a Sign) “The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. He replied, “When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”

Apparently, interpreting the signs of the times has always been a problem because, even today, we are still having a problem doing so. In my opinion, one of the reasons for this is that we only look at the world or we only look at the church when, in fact, we need to be looking at both. What is happening in the world is only half the story as what is happening in the Church is just as important. Neither is more important than the other as they are of equal importance.

Biblically, I believe that every prophecy about end times has happened except the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, and the plans are now very well advanced for that. Prophecies about the state of the world have already happened, or are already happening. Prophecies about Israel have happened or are unfolding today. Armageddon is already in view, and the armies of Israel’s enemies are virtually on a war footing. Everything escatalogically is pointing to the return of Christ.

So what about the other pointer - What is happening in the Church?

The Church today has never been under such attack is it is at the moment. There have been more Christian martyrs in the past 20 years than in any other time in history. Never before has so much emphasis been upon the separation of church and state. Never before have other religions, specifically Islam, been so dominant and so aggressive in their attitude to Christianity.

Even the church itself seems to be dividing against itself. In some places, the Gospel is almost never preached any more. All sorts of ‘ear tickling’ messages are being preached instead of the Gospel. Christianity today is more of a business than a faith. Precisely when the world needs a message of hope, so the Church seems to be failing to bring one. The Bible says there will be a great falling away, meaning the church will divide between those who follow false doctrines and those who keep following the Lord’s teaching. To me this is epitomised by prosperity teaching, replacement theology, and Chrislam – my opinion only.

Whichever way you look at it, we appear to be deep into the end times spoken of in Joel 2 and in particular, verses 28-32 are true today - “In those days, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.”

However - Truly, it is not all doom and gloom – not by a long way. Despite the dubious doctrines, despite the oppression, and despite the persecution, the Church is growing faster today than at any time in its history. It is only in the Western world that Christianity is still diminishing. Yet many Church programs, of late, have taken on an urgency for the lost, and urgency for the poor, and an urgency for seeing the Holy Spirit move in signs and wonders. There is a growing sense of reaching the community with Christ’s love and of demonstrating our faith rather than just preaching it. There is a growing excitement in many of our churches right now and a growing urgency to seek the Lord for these times.

Let God’s people take heart, for God is still in control of all things and, if I am half the prophet I am supposed to be, I have to write this to warn all of you, yet still encourage you, for what lies ahead.

Are you too serious?

In Gods Own Image

Do you know, I think that sometimes, maybe even too often, Christians take themselves too seriously – far too seriously. I think it is probably a bit of a religious spirit. That’s the same spirit as the Pharisees had towards Jesus. You can’t do this; you can’t do that. It’s Sunday so you’ve got to do this or that and you’ve got to behave like this. It must drive our heavenly Father absolutely mad. It must grieve Him beyond our comprehension. He must sometimes just want to give up on us. Yet He doesn’t give up on us; He doesn’t get mad, although He does grieve over us. I mean to say, what kind of witness is it to take ourselves so seriously that we look down upon the unsaved and unchurched?

What is it with us that, as soon as we ‘get religion’, we have to conform to someone’s idea of ‘what a Christian should look and be like’? Why do we have to be conformed to man’s ideas? What is wrong with God’s idea? I am certain that sometimes God laughs at our silly ideas. Here we are, wearing our Christian hat, being the epitome of our own idea of what a Christian should be, and God laughs at us – just before He weeps over us.

According to the Bible, God made man in His own image, and he saw what He had made and it was good. Genesis 1:26-28 & 31 “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them”

“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

His Word says that God laughs, He cries or weeps, He gets angry, and so on. If we are made in God's own image, then If God laughs, surely He laughs with us, surely He must sometimes laugh at us too. When we laugh at ourselves, that’s when He laughs with us and at us too all at the same time. Life is to be lived “Abundantly”. According to Jesus, “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:9-10. In this context, I firmly believe that abundance means everything we need for a good life in Christ – including provision, love, and laughter.

Knowing all of this, why is it that so many Christians seem to live an abundant life of misery and bitterness? God made us in His image and Jesus has given us life in His abundance – that is happiness, sufficiency, and fellowship. We are to share our abundance with all men – not just our Christian brothers and sisters, but we are to love our neighbours too. That means loving them with God’s love; weeping with those who weep and laughing and sharing our joy with everyone we meet.

So let is please take ourselves just a little less seriously – God certainly does – and let us show the abundant, cheerful face of Christianity to all those around us. Family, work colleagues, and neighbours alike. After all, it’s the first step towards fulfilling the great commission.
