Social Media

Use Facebook and Twitter for Jesus

There is much wild and frenzied talk about the evils of the internet and, particularly, about those terrible “Social Media” programs called Twitter and Facebook. Well, just in case you hadn’t noticed, I use both Twitter and Facebook a great deal – and so do thousands of other Christians. You see, social media, like the whole of the internet, can be used for both good and bad things. As Christians, it is our responsibility to use them properly, for good things, for sanctified things, in order to encourage others on their daily Christian walk.

We simply put our thoughts out there and they seem to just float off into the ether. I look forward to the moment I find out just where they landed, what seed they planted, and what harvest they eventually produced. It will be the same for all of us too – we simply plant the seed not worrying about the reaction it will draw. All we can do is plant it and allow the Holy Spirit to do His work with it.

Those who are not interested in our output can simply ignore it as they do with everything else put out by other people. They may sometime like what we say and tell us so. Other times they may comment in either agreement or disagreement. But actually anyone else's opinion of us or our output is none of our business. God's opinion is the only one that counts. Others may hurt or sting you - God will only love you. Others may laud and honour you - God will still only love you. Jesus calls for us to do the same – to love our neighbours as ourselves.

I would like to think that those who use FB & Twitter could be so blessed by the Christian community that we can actually begin to make a difference. We can spread the Gospel more, we can comfort those who mourn, we can laugh with those who laugh and weep with those who weep. We can rejoice and sympathise, empathise or oppose. We can make our voices, and therefore God’s voice, heard more and more in a world that barely believes He even exists. We can influence our society for the betterment of all. If in all my use of FB & Twitter, I can turn just one person back to the Lord then I will be satisfied that all the effort was worth it.

Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” We desperately need fishermen right now – on FB & Twitter too.
