Spirit of Slap

The Spirit of Slap

God’s people are unfailingly a wonderful family. They are good. They are funny. They are loyal, and they are supportive. Yet there are moments . . . .

On a ministry trip about three years ago, one of our team remarked on the ‘coldness’ of the people who seemed to just sit there and listen politely but showed no reaction whatsoever. “God’s frozen chosen” he called them. Another team member said, rather dryly, “I feel the spirit of slap coming on.” We all laughed but we all actually agreed.

There are those moments when Christians seem to need a good slap to wake them up to whatever is happening right under their noses and to which they show no reaction or emotion whatsoever. When I read my Bible, the occasional verse jumps out at me with new revelation and meaning. I refer to such moments as like being “slapped in the face with a wet fish”.

When I hear a good sermon or a good Word and there is little or no reaction from the floor, that’s when I want to administer the slap – wet fish or not!! Same when someone is saved or healed or whatever. We need to celebrate it – God does.

When the people of God take miracles for granted, that’s when we need to employ the spirit of slap. I am convinced that the spirit of slap is a gift from God although it is meant to be verbal and not physical.

Mind you . . . . .
