Where are the Mighty Men Today?
The
Bible is full of mighty men doing mighty deeds. There was Abraham getting to be
so powerful that kings came to his table to ask favours. Lot pleaded with God
for a whole city. Samson pulled a whole building down. Gideon defeated
thousands with just 300 men. Daniel stood in a lions den and in a furnace but
came to no harm. There are many others too. My own hero was Elisha who had the
double anointing. Apart from anything else, he was a baldy like me! He called
bears out; he made axes float; he blinded a whole army, capture them, then fed
and released them.
Through
the centuries there were other heroes and mighty men and women. Paul started the
trend. Then came great explorer evangelists like Augustine, Cuthbert, and
Patrick. Closer to home we had the Wesley’s, Jonathan Edwards, Moody &
Sankey, William Booth, and Hudson Taylor. Later still we have people like Gladys
Aylward, Billy Graham and Reinhard Bonnke. All men and women who have stood the
world on end for their Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
So,
where are the modern day heroes? I truly believe we are entering the days of
the church of the lesser known saints. I really don’t think there will be any
really outstanding role models. Rather there is coming a day when the church
will suddenly produce locally well known but not famous evangelists and
preachers – soul winners certainly but those who really can live humbly and
without the cloak of fame being thrust upon them.
The
Lord is raising a new army of mighty men on the scale of Old Testament times. Men
and women who will be fearless in the face of opposition – even to the giving
of their own lives. Some will come from the rank and file of the church but
some are not yet even Christians. God is no respecter of sex, rank, position,
or money – nor the lack of it either. He chooses, He equips, He provodes, and
He opens all the right doors. I hear the tramp of many feet as this army is
raised from the valley of dry bones as well as from the men and women of God
today.
In
the words of Isaiah, “Here I am Lord, send me”. Will you join me? It is time
for Gods people to arise and be known. Otherwise, how will the people know to
whom to turn when they start to ask, “Who is this Jesus?”
He
is Jesus, the Christ, Son of God, Messiah. Is He calling you today I wonder? If
so, don’t delay, give Him your answer soon. If you won’t, who will?
