Duty of Care
Sitting here minding my own business when the Lord
interrupted my thoughts which were meandering around nothing in particular.
It’s at these odd moments that He asks us questions that can make us sit up and
pay attention to Him. “How are you exercising your duty of care?”
Interesting expression most often used as a legal
term meaning that someone has a duty to take care of or on behalf of someone
else for whom they are responsible. So I pursued Him a little and asked Him
what He meant by that?
“You have a duty of care of My business, especially
towards those who cannot care for themselves. How are you doing that for Me?”
That’s a bit of a broad question, so I hedged a
little. “Well Lord, there is Junction, (our feeding and fellowship program for
those in need), or there’s Sanctuary, (our home group for the hurt and
wounded).”
“Hmmm, that’s a start.”
“Please expand a bit, Lord. You’ve lost me.”
Don’t ever ask the Lord a question if you’re not
sure you want to hear the answer. “What are you doing for widows, orphans,
prisoners, misfits, and the lost?”
“Am I not doing this, Lord?”
“Yes you are doing something, but I want you to start
spreading the word about these things. Other people have the same duty of care
but are just not exercising it. Many don’t even give it a thought but most
assume it’s someone else’s problem.”
I was reminded of Jesus’s own comments about
feeding and clothing those in need. You know, “Inasmuch as you did it for the least of these my brothers, you did it
for me.” Then someone called me today and spoke this blessing over me “The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped.”
Proverbs 11:25
“Give, and it
will be given to you. A good measure, pressed
down, shaken together and
running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it
will be measured to you.’” Luke 6:38
Is
God good – or is He good?
