Gems of Truth
“Being a disciple of Jesus Christ doesn't end with
saying a sinner’s prayer ... that's when it begins.” George Perez.
This
little gem made me think today. My first thought was, “Who is George Perez?”
Well, he is a fire fighter from New Jersey – a captain who has dedicated his
life to saving others both physically and spiritually. Here is a man who proves
that ordinary folk can lead wonderfully dedicated lives and who, more to the
point, can make wonderful living truths out of simple one line statements.
After
we first said the sinners prayer, I wonder how many of us thought, “That’s it,
I’ve done it. Job done!” Actually, I wonder how many of us first said the
sinners prayer at all – but that’s a thought for another day as I know of
countless thousands who have gone to church all their lives but have never said
the sinners prayer nor had a relationship with Jesus Christ. Are they even
saved? That is not my decision nor is it my business. That is between them and
God.
It
is only once we have said the sinner’s prayer that the enemy takes any real
interest in us. Prior to this point in our lives, he was just happily watching
us walk right into hell. Once we say the prayer, however, Satan knows he has
lost ground to us and he starts targeting us.
Yes,
the sinner’s prayer is all important but only as the starting point on our road
to salvation. As we pray it, God will decide who means it in their heart and
who doesn’t. God will then decide who is saved and has their name written in
the Lamb’s Book of Life.
All
we can do is to lead the sinner in the prayer and then begin to disciple them
along the road of the cross. What a privilege that is and what joy it brings
us. Thank you Lord.
