Just for the One

For the One

“Stop For the one” is Heidi and Rolland Baker’s ministry motto or catchphrase. Just recently, the Lord has been laying this phrase on our hearts too.

Stop for the one – huddled in a shop doorway with bags or rucksack beside him. They may have a habit but they all need a friend.

Stop for the one – sleeping rough, needing a shave or shower.  Many have just simply fallen upon a bad patch and all they may need is a little bit of help getting back on their feet again.

Stop for the one – begging, but don’t give them money. Buy them a meal or a train ticket, but don’t give them money. Any spare cash they receive will as likely as not go to feed any drink or drug habit they may have.

Be prepared by knowing where to find free meals in your town. Our church gives a meal on Monday evening. Another two churches give meals on different evenings.

Be prepared by knowing where the CAB or other advice centre office is. Sometimes people need help just to get started again.

Be prepared by knowing what other help is available in your town. Food, shelter, medical, dental, and temporary work/accommodation.

Stop for the one. Speak to them. Grab a coffee with them. Sure, some will take all they can get, but most will simply be amazed and grateful that anyone has the heart to extend the hand of love and friendship to them.

Always remember – there but for the grace of God goes you or me.
