Atheism vs Testimony

Atheism and Your Testimony

Atheism, like many other opinion sets, is a choice. Someone chooses to either believe or not believe in an opined point of view. There is no rationale behind it. One simply chooses which opinion to believe. Actually, many give things a great deal of thought before coming to a, to themselves, perfectly logical conclusion and therefore decision. This is when the trouble begins. Discussions with those of a different perspective frequently lead to arguments, ‘fights’, and splits – lost friendships and split families.

I heard one of such argument with a different ending that happened over Easter.

On Good Friday our church takes part, with all the other churches in our area, in a march of witness and short service. It’s an annual event and those taking part hand out leaflets to passers by inviting them hear the good news by coming to church over Easter. Among the watchers and passers-by, there is always a small number of ‘baiters’ and ‘scoffers’ – those who come along hoping for a public debate on Christianity – the more public the better as they feel they have a right to denigrate and deride those who believe differently from themselves and their own point of view.

One man in the march, a friend of ours, was handing out the leaflets and he ran into a man ‘looking for an argument’. After an initial exchange, the man challenged with, “Prove to me that this Jesus rose from the dead.” Our friends response took the wind right out of the guy’s sails. “I don’t have to prove anything to you and I’m not even going to try. God will prove everything to you. The Bible says to seek God with all your heart and if you seek Him you will find Him. Then He will show you the truth and then you can choose whether to believe Him or not. This is my experience . . . . . “

He then gave a 2 minute testimony. It left the by-stander a little lost for words. He didn’t get his argument, although he blustered a little bit. What he got was a testimony to God’s goodness and mercy as well as a very short Gospel message thrown in. We don’t know what happened after that and, other than knowing a seed was sown, we don’t even know the guys name. We just had to leave him with Jesus.

The moral of this story is that God doesn’t need you nor anyone else to defend Him. He can defend Himself. Aslan is not a tame lion – we just need to open the cage and let Him out.
